Kira

Kira's Official Page at HENSON.COM

Like Jen, Kira survived the slaughter of the Gelflings. Rescued by the Pod People, she learned to live in harmony with the woodland creatures who inhabited the swamps and forests surrounding the Pod Village. When fate brought Kira and Jen together, she joined him on his quest. They gave each other strength, encouragement, and the will to succeed.

Her hair is long and fair, her eyes large, and the tunic she wears is brown.  She has wide cheekbones, a small chin, and pointed ears.  She has been hidden all her life in a village near the swamp.

Kira's mother was strangled to death by a Skeksis.

Kira lives with the Pod People.

When Kira was young she would swing in a hammock, was fed from a gourd, and when she jumped from a high tree provoked gasps of alarm among the peasant folk.  She examined plants, played cat's cradle with peasant children, of an evening samg the people's songs with them, and once hid among swamp plants while a phalanx of Garthim trooped past.

Her foster mother, Ydra, taught her Gelfling speech, explaining that their two races had always lived together in courteous harmony, as they had with nature.  From Ydra she learned to communicate with animals and to understand the nature of plants.

Kira never really learned history, especially Gelfling history.

Kira used to fear the color black due to the Garthim raids of her childhood.  She overcame this fear while spending time floating in a shell, the husk of a dead beetle, along the Black River.

Kira sings melodies in the Lydian mode which sound ancient.  In the union of her voice and the melody is sorrow and its transfiguration into acceptance and wonder.  It always seems to be the same melody, yet she has such command of inflections and subtly varied intervals that each breath-line discloses a new modulation.

The Pod People in her village taught her to use a double-weighted thong to bring down Crystal Bats.

Kira likes to play with a length of string by making a simple cat's cradle on her fingers.  She then pulls out more loops, all the time making it more complicated.

No one ever taught Kira to write or read.

Kira has diaphanous wings, which unfold from her back.
